I think it’s safe to say most Bucs fans are scratching their heads wondering what just happened, as most were expecting the Bucs to address the trenches in an incredibly strong trench draft. But with the new coaching staff in place, we could only speculate what how they would see thing, but after today we now know a few things.
We Like Athletes That We Can Coach. Devin White, Sean Bunting, and Jamel Deal are all incredible athletes for their positions, and were each some of the best athletes in this draft. All three of these guys need some refinement, but all possess freakish measureables and are regarded as high quality individuals who are very coachable.
We Liked Our DL/EDGES. Arians himself said he liked what we had up front on defence after mini camp, and Jason Licht reiterated that point following Day 2 of the draft. Licht mentioned that he thinks we are set at edge with JPP, Nassib, Spence and newly signed Shaq Barrett. Up front we have Vea as our anchor, and will likely see some combinations of Gholston, Allen, and possibly McCoy beside him. This appears to be our group heading into the season- give or take McCoy and what happens with him.
We HATED our Secondary. This is the big shocker so far. I think everyone figured we would get a DB at some point, but 3 of them on Day 2? After taking Stewart, Davis, and Whitehead last year? And taking Justin Evans the year before? And after picking up 2016 1st rounder Vernon Hargreaves 5th year option? We are talking 8 guys in the first 4 rounds of the last 4 drafts. The old adage of “you can never have too many corners” has been taken to a whole new level. Clearly we didn’t like our defensive backs that much.
In what is being regarded as an all time draft for the trenches, not taking a single OL or DL/Edge with these 4 picks is head scratching to say the least. We still have a massive hole at right guard, a 34 year old right tackle with nothing behind him, and a front 7 on defence that could certainly use some help. Day 3 will hopefully land us some guys for those spots, but having to rely on Day 3 picks is never a good idea. Here’s to some luck addressing those needs.
